PhD Research Fellow in Systematic Entomology
- A 4-year position as PhD Research Fellow in Systematic Entomology is available at the Natural History Museum (NHM), University of OsloThe 4-year fellowship includes 25% career-enhancing duty work.The project is supervised by Dr. Hallvard Elven (NHM).The PhD project will focus on the systematics and ecology of selected groups within the Diptera family Cecidomyiidae, specifically within the large subfamily Cecidomyiinae. Most members of this subfamily are gall formers on vascular plants, whereas some are predators, fungivores, saprophages, or non-galling phytophages. Different species are often ecologically connected, e.g. as predator and prey, or as galler and inquiline, but their relationships are often not fully understood. A significant fraction of the North European species still await description.The candidate will investigate both ecological and phylogenetic relationships and do a taxonomic revision with species descriptions. The tasks will include field work and lab rearing, bioinformatics using Next Generation Sequencing, and traditional taxonomic studies using morphology. The PhD will be associated with the species survey project “Gall Midges Phase II” financed by the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre. It will use mainly material collected in Norway.The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. However, the growing use of TAVI has also increased the need for accurate methods to assess valve disease, identify patients who will benefit from intervention, determine the optimal timing of treatment, and evaluate outcomes after the procedure. Current echocardiographic measures of valve severity and haemodynamic performance rely on simplified assumptions about valve geometry and blood flow that may not fully reflect the complex flow conditions present in individual patients.This project aims to improve the assessment of aortic valve disease through the development of patient-specific experimental and computational models. The doctoral candidate will develop three-dimensional printed models of diseased aortic valves and play a central role in the further development and validation of a laboratory-based mock circulation platform capable of reproducing physiological pulsatile flow conditions. This experimental framework will enable the acquisition of high-fidelity pressure and flow measurements that can be directly compared with echocardiographic assessments.A central objective of the project is to investigate the accuracy and limitations of current echocardiographic methods for estimating transvalvular pressure gradients and valve severity. By combining controlled experimental studies with patient-specific valve geometries, the project will identify haemodynamic and anatomical conditions under which commonly used echocardiographic assumptions break down and explore how these limitations can be overcome. Emerging ultrasound techniques such as blood speckle tracking (BST) will also be evaluated to determine whether they provide additional haemodynamic information beyond conventional Doppler methods. To provide mechanistic insight into the experimental findings, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, including fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations where appropriate, will be developed and validated against experimental measurements. These models will be used to investigate the relationships between valve morphology, flow patterns, pressure recovery, and pressure loss, helping to explain the limitations of simplified Bernoulli-based approaches. The computational framework will also serve as a theoretical framework for the development of improved echocardiographic methods based on clinically obtainable measurements, which will subsequently be evaluated and validated against reference measurements obtained in the mock circulation system. The candidate will benefit from access to one of Europe's largest TAVI programmes, extensive clinical and experimental datasets, and international secondments with research groups in London and Ghent that have extensive experience in cardiovascular mock circulation systems and experimental haemodynamics. These collaborations will support the development of the experimental platform and provide opportunities for advanced training and knowledge exchange.The project will be conducted in close collaboration with cardiologists and clinical researchers involved in the assessment and treatment of patients with aortic valve disease. While echocardiographic examinations will be performed by collaborating clinical investigators, the doctoral candidate will play a central role in integrating experimental, computational, and clinical perspectives to improve diagnostic methods and support more informed treatment decisions. Although echocardiography is the most commonly used imaging technique for assessing cardiac function, many of the key factors responsible for diastolic dysfunction—such as myocardial stiffness, impaired relaxation, and elevated filling pressures—cannot be measured directly using current non-invasive methods.This project aims to improve the assessment of diastolic function by combining echocardiographic measurements with patient-specific digital twin technology. The doctoral candidate will develop mathematical models that link clinically acquired echocardiographic data to the underlying physiological and mechanical properties of the heart. By integrating imaging information with computational models, the project seeks to estimate clinically important parameters that are otherwise difficult to measure without invasive procedures.While the main focus of the project is the integration of conventional echocardiographic measurements with computational models of cardiac function, there will also be opportunities to investigate emerging ultrasound modalities such as blood speckle tracking (BST). BST provides information about intracardiac flow dynamics and can be used to derive parameters such as intraventricular pressure gradients, energy loss, and flow vortices. The clinical utility of these measurements and their relationship to filling pressures and diastolic function will be explored.The candidate will participate in the collection and analysis of animal and clinical datasets, including echocardiographic studies with simultaneously recorded invasive pressure measurements. These data will be used to develop, calibrate, and validate the proposed modelling approaches. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for the project “Truth, Information, Democracy and Law”
- Job descriptionA Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) is available as part of the project Truth, information, democracy and law (TIDAL) - Department of Private Law (TIDAL) funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and Norid AS. The fellow will be responsible for their own research and work closely with the TIDAL team at the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law - Department of Private Law, UiO (NRCCL).The project runs from April 2026 until March 2030. In addition to researchers at the NRCCL, the project team includes researchers at Queen Mary University of London, University of Bergen, University of Tromsø, Lund University, Bond University, BI Norwegian Business School, and Boston University. At the NRCCL, the core project team comprises four people, including the postdoctoral fellow. The project is led by Professor Lee A. Bygrave.The appointment period lasts three years without teaching and administrative duties, or four years with teaching and administrative duties making up 25% of the total workload. A four-year fellowship requires that the candidate can contribute to the Faculty of Law's current teaching needs. If the Postdoctoral Fellow does not already have qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professor position, UiO shall facilitate the acquisition of such competence during the employment period.More about the positionThe TIDAL project concerns the legal preconditions for a well-functioning democracy in an age marked by increasing generation and dissemination of disinformation, misinformation, and other forms of information disorder (ID). Drawing upon cross-disciplinary insights and approaches, including a policy field study of stakeholder viewpoints in Norway and the United Kingdom, the project tackles the fundamental question of whether the law needs to be reformed in order to tackle ID more effectively and, if yes, what avenue(s) of reform would be most sensible. It does so in light of the vexing problem that measures to combat ID in the name of securing or promoting democracy can end up undermining democracyʼs bedrock by tightening various freedoms and accountability frameworks that help buttress democracy and the rule of law. The TIDAL project not only examines how best to overcome the latter problem, but elucidates a range of other related matters. These include: the effects of recent legal initiatives by the European Union (EU) to curb ID; the interaction of hard law and soft law codes in this regulatory domain; and current geopolitical tensions at the global level over appropriate legal-regulatory strategies for tackling ID. At a more fundamental jurisprudential level, the project interrogates the relationship between law and the promotion of truth, analysing the borderlines between when law penalizes the dissemination of lies, “untruths” and other false or misleading information and when it abstains from doing so, along with the rationale(s) for either course of action.As part of elucidating the relationship of ID and the law with a view to identifying optimal regulatory strategies for reducing the deleterious effects of ID, the project pursues five main sub-objectives:(1) to map the non-legal structural factors causing ID, drawing upon scholarship in the social sciences and information sciences;(2) to develop an holistic understanding of ID that bridges insights from the social sciences and information sciences with insights from legal-regulatory scholarship;(3) to assess how the law, in light of these insights, currently facilitates and impedes ID;(4) to evaluate what role law should play to remedy ID in the future and to develop and assess new norms, legal concepts, and regulatory frameworks, innovating legal treatment of ID;(5) to assess the legal innovations within the wider geopolitical situation which Norway finds herself in, with a view to minimizing jurisdictional “overreach”.The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work closely with TIDAL team members in pursuing the above-listed objectives. The postdoctoral fellow is also expected to engage in international dissemination activities and collaborate with key scholars in the field, outside the project group.
