Research, too, increasingly samples failed ventures to extract lessons for founders, investors, and policymakers. Yet a foundational assumption underlying all of this remains largely unexamined: that failures carry rich, transferable lessons, knowledge useful to others beyond those who failed.This PhD project investigates failure in digital ventures: how and why digital startups stagnate and shut down, what their founders learn from the experience, how they narrate it, and more fundamentally what kind of knowledge venture failures can offer anyone beyond those who experience them directly.The project combines conceptual work on the informational value of failure cases with qualitative empirical studies. A well-defined empirical setting is already identified: the candidate will recruit and study ventures founded by alumni of the Department's MSc programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management who have received STUD-ENT funding over the past decade. The candidate will have genuine influence on the design of the individual studies. Possible research questions include how founders narrate and attribute their ventures' outcomes; whether they treat what they learned as specific to their case, or as broadly applicable lessons, ones they carry into future ventures or that others could learn from; and how discontinued ventures compare with closely matched surviving ones.The position is affiliated with the Entrepreneurship (ENT) group, and the candidate will be actively involved in the group's daily research, teaching, and social activities. The dissertation will be article-based, with supervision by faculty in the ENT group (main supervisor: Associate Professor Daniel Leunbach) and a co-supervisor from the Digital Innovation (DIN) group. The MultiSCORE project focuses on the formation of large- and small-scale structure in the solar corona and combines high-resolution solar observations with numerical modelling. The successful candidate will contribute to the observational aspect of the project using multi-vantage-point observations of the solar corona from Solar Orbiter and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The candidate will work on the analysis of fine-scale structure in the corona using Solar Orbiter/EUI imaging and SPICE spectroscopic data, and on reconstruction of three-dimensional structure of active regions by combining multi-vantage-point Solar Orbiter and SDO/AIA observations with constraints from magnetic field extrapolations. Observational results will be compared with synthetic observables from numerical models. ArbeidsoppgaverProject and Job DescriptionTranscatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has transformed the treatment of aortic valve disease, allowing many patients to receive life-changing therapy without open-heart surgery. However, the growing use of TAVI has also increased the need for accurate methods to assess valve disease, identify patients who will benefit from intervention, determine the optimal timing of treatment, and evaluate outcomes after the procedure. Current echocardiographic measures of valve severity and haemodynamic performance rely on simplified assumptions about valve geometry and blood flow that may not fully reflect the complex flow conditions present in individual patients.This project aims to improve the assessment of aortic valve disease through the development of patient-specific experimental and computational models. The doctoral candidate will develop three-dimensional printed models of diseased aortic valves and play a central role in the further development and validation of a laboratory-based mock circulation platform capable of reproducing physiological pulsatile flow conditions. This experimental framework will enable the acquisition of high-fidelity pressure and flow measurements that can be directly compared with echocardiographic assessments.A central objective of the project is to investigate the accuracy and limitations of current echocardiographic methods for estimating transvalvular pressure gradients and valve severity. By combining controlled experimental studies with patient-specific valve geometries, the project will identify haemodynamic and anatomical conditions under which commonly used echocardiographic assumptions break down and explore how these limitations can be overcome. Emerging ultrasound techniques such as blood speckle tracking (BST) will also be evaluated to determine whether they provide additional haemodynamic information beyond conventional Doppler methods. To provide mechanistic insight into the experimental findings, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, including fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations where appropriate, will be developed and validated against experimental measurements. These models will be used to investigate the relationships between valve morphology, flow patterns, pressure recovery, and pressure loss, helping to explain the limitations of simplified Bernoulli-based approaches. The computational framework will also serve as a theoretical framework for the development of improved echocardiographic methods based on clinically obtainable measurements, which will subsequently be evaluated and validated against reference measurements obtained in the mock circulation system. The candidate will benefit from access to one of Europe's largest TAVI programmes, extensive clinical and experimental datasets, and international secondments with research groups in London and Ghent that have extensive experience in cardiovascular mock circulation systems and experimental haemodynamics. Although echocardiography is the most commonly used imaging technique for assessing cardiac function, many of the key factors responsible for diastolic dysfunction—such as myocardial stiffness, impaired relaxation, and elevated filling pressures—cannot be measured directly using current non-invasive methods.This project aims to improve the assessment of diastolic function by combining echocardiographic measurements with patient-specific digital twin technology. The doctoral candidate will develop mathematical models that link clinically acquired echocardiographic data to the underlying physiological and mechanical properties of the heart. By integrating imaging information with computational models, the project seeks to estimate clinically important parameters that are otherwise difficult to measure without invasive procedures.While the main focus of the project is the integration of conventional echocardiographic measurements with computational models of cardiac function, there will also be opportunities to investigate emerging ultrasound modalities such as blood speckle tracking (BST). BST provides information about intracardiac flow dynamics and can be used to derive parameters such as intraventricular pressure gradients, energy loss, and flow vortices. The clinical utility of these measurements and their relationship to filling pressures and diastolic function will be explored.The candidate will participate in the collection and analysis of animal and clinical datasets, including echocardiographic studies with simultaneously recorded invasive pressure measurements. These data will be used to develop, calibrate, and validate the proposed modelling approaches.
