The position will be affiliated with IDI's research group on Applied Information Technology (AIT).The fellowship will be part of our research on digital transformation from a sociotechnical perspective, which highlights the interaction between technological development and organizational processes and concerns. The aim of the fellowship is to contribute original knowledge and valuable insights into this dynamic relationship going beyond mere technological promises and managerial visions when it comes to digital transformation. More specific, the fellowship will focus on digital workplace transformation and seek to examine the interplay between work practices and digital transformation, and how this can be facilitated and managed. Central topics of investigation will include digital transformation, use of artificial intelligence (AI), user agency and empowerment, digital workplace and work, new ways of working, and other related topics.The PhD candidate is expected to conduct in-depth empirical investigations into development, implementation, and/or use of digital technologies in specific organizations. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KHQjc4ndas&t=41sAbout the positionThe central theme of this PhD is to investigate, from a sociotechnical perspective, how Norwegian public-sector agencies and private companies navigate digital sovereignty challenges arising from increasingly centralized and platformized digital infrastructures.As digitalization accelerates, debate has shifted from societal consequences to understanding how organizations become dependent on systems and services they do not control, and how such digital dependencies affect their capacity for independent decision-making. In Europe, these concerns have driven major regulatory developments, notably the EU AI Act and related digital sovereignty initiatives, which introduce risk- and rights-based approaches but often leave underlying digital dependencies unaddressed.Even with clear legal frameworks, the dependencies that Norwegian organizations develop on global platform companies, cloud providers, and proprietary software vendors remain difficult to identify and assess. These dependencies arise not only from technical limitations but also from interactions among algorithms, data flows, platform architectures, workflows, and contracts, leaving organizations unable to switch providers, access their own data, or modify systems without significant cost or disruption.Addressing these challenges requires new expertise, assessment methods, and governance models capable of identifying where power is concentrated and how it might be reconfigured to preserve organizational autonomy and national digital sovereignty. While principles such as transparency, fairness, and accountability are widely endorsed, they offer limited operational guidance for exercising meaningful choice over digital dependencies, creating a gap between sovereignty as a regulatory ideal and sovereignty as practical capacity.This PhD project aims to address this gap by investigating how Norwegian public and private organizations can develop strategies to reconfigure digital dependencies through governance arrangements, architectural alternatives, and collective action to achieve and maintain digital sovereignty. The project will contribute to a growing community of researchers examining digital sovereignty. Our research includes developing concepts for renewable-driven technologies and system solutions to decarbonize the chemical and energy industries, including carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), Power-to-X, energy storage, industrial symbiosis, and emerging energy-intensive infrastructures.This PhD project will investigate integrated energy and carbon management systems for future carbon-neutral industries, with a particular focus on the interaction between AI data centers, direct air carbon capture (DAC), district heating networks, and other industrial processes that can effectively utilize low-grade waste heat. The project aims to develop methods for the design, optimization, and operation of integrated systems that maximize both economic performance and environmental benefits.The research may involve a combination of commercial process simulation tools and in-house model development for individual unit operations and integrated systems.
